Steamed Method of Preparation

The traditional method of preparation is when the placenta is rinsed, steamed (sometimes with herbs), sliced, dehydrated, and encapsulated. In the TCM theory, it is believed that the process of birth leaves mom very "yin" or cold. One way to help this is to add "yang" or heat energy. I do this through the gentle steaming process. The placenta is not cooked so it retains all of its nutrients. The TCM method also provides a slow/ steady release of energy to help mom with hormone stabilizers in the postpartum period. This method usually produces fewer pills and may require that mom take more pills for a longer period of time.  (Please note that we are not TCM practitioners.  Our placenta encapsulation process is only inspired by the TCM methods.) If you want to add even more warmth, we can steam with ginger and lemon.

** Raw method available by request.

Umbilical Cord Keepsake

Umbilical cord keepsakes are a great way to hold on to a piece of the birth of your child. After rinsing and making prints, the cord is cut at the base of the placenta and formed in to the shape of your choice. Many mom's choose to have the cord say "LOVE". Once formed, it goes into the dehydrator with the placenta. Once done, it will be stored in a muslin baggie for you. Keep this in a cool and dry place.

Placenta Tincture

The placenta tincture is made by taking a piece of your raw placenta and steeping it in a high quality 100 proof alcohol for 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, the placenta can be strained out and the tincture can be used. The tincture can be used during menstruation to relieve cramping, to help the transition into menopause, and during times of trauma, illness or stress after your capsules are gone. It can be used to alleviate teething pains for baby and when added to a bit of water, can be given to baby to help fight illness. Many parents say that it brings the child back to a balanced physical and emotional state. If you had a girl, the tincture can even be used by her when she begins menstruating. This will help with cramping and to balance out hormones.

Placenta Print

Placenta prints are made using a high quality card stock paper and finished with a sealant spray. We can discuss your preferences on dyes and colors. The color(s) of your choice are painted on to the placenta and then the paper is laid on top and pulled off. The placenta is rinsed off before cutting and dehydrating. Placenta prints are a fantastic way to preserve the very thing that was womb mate and lifeline to your baby.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the placenta?

The placenta is a disposable organ attached to the inside of your womb during pregnancy. This incredible organ is actually the only disposable organ that the human body creates and then naturally discards once its purpose is fulfilled. When the blastocyst (tiny form of cells that become baby) implant on the uterine wall, placenta development begins. The outer layer of the blastocyst becomes the trophoblast which forms the amniotic sac. It wraps around the cluster of cells protecting the developing baby. The placenta acts as a comforting womb mate to your baby.

What is placentophagia?

Placentophagia is the process of a new mother consuming her placenta postpartum by either eating the placenta raw, cooked, in capsule form or drinking the juices from the placenta once it is cooked. This is not an issue for vegan mothers because nothing was harmed to bring about the organ meat for consumption. The consumption of placenta is a strong postpartum remedy used by women for centuries, to aid in healing and recovery after bringing forth new life. Packed with essential vitamins, minerals and hormones, the placenta is bio-specific to what mama needs in the days and weeks after giving birth. Placentas are as unique as fingerprints, no two being alike. Therefore, the placenta is perfectly catered to your needs with each baby. Placenta encapsulation makes consumption palatable and easy, and the benefits are astounding. Explore the links to learn more about the the benefits of placenta consumption and the methods I offer.

What is placenta encapsulation?

Placental encapsulation is the practice of ingesting the placenta after it has been steamed, dehydrated, ground, and placed into pills. Traditionally, this is taken by the mother and is believed to impart numerous health benefits. There are 2 common methods of preparation; the raw method and the steamed method.

What is the steamed/gentle method of encapsulation (TCM method)?

The steamed/gentle aka TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine method of placenta encapsulation is the act of rinsing, steaming with herbs, slicing, dehydrating and encapsulating.

What is the raw method of encapsulation?

The raw method of placenta encapsulation is the act of rinsing, slicing, dehydrating and encapsulating. This method avoids the steaming process and there are no herbs added.

What are the benefits of placenta encapsulation?

  • Prevents or reduces the risk of developing postpartum depression.
  • Reduces or eliminates the risk of postpartum bleeding and hemorrhage.
  • Provides mom with a boost of Oxytocin to increase bonding experiences.
  • Increases energy levels
  • Helps uterus contract faster
  • Increases the production of milk and makes breastfeeding easier
  • Helps to restore the body's iron levels to normal limits
  • Helps to reduce the risk of insomnia
  • A natural pain reliever
  • and so much more...

How many capsules will I receive?

The amount of capsules you will receive will be dependent on the method of preparation you choose, in addition to the size of the placenta. The average range can be anywhere from 50 capsules all the way up to 200+. The steamed method will most likely yield less than the raw method.

How do I store the placenta until you pick it up?

It is super easy to store the placenta until we can pick it up. The placenta can be left out in room temp for up to 3 hours. After this, it is very important to double bag in a ziplock bag and either store in a cooler with ice or put in the fridge. It will last in the fridge for 2 days. If you decide to not encapsulate right away, put in the freezer. Make sure it is double sealed.

What if I have a c-section?

The same would apply for c-section births as vaginal births. Be sure your doctor is aware you are keeping the placenta. In the event you cannot advocate for yourself, be sure your birth support is also aware of your choice so they may ensure you keep your placenta.

What are the hormones/chemicals found in the placenta?

  • Oxytocin: natural pain reliever, promotes bonding, helps to increase milk supply.
  • POEF (Placenta Opioid Enhancing Factor): Pain reliever
  • Cortisone: This hormone unlocks energy stored in the body and combats stress. (cortisol)
  • Interferon: This hormones stimulates the immune system to fight off infections while the mother is healing from birth.

  • Prolactin/HPL: Stimulates healthy mammary function and milk production.
  • Prostaglandins: Acts as an anti-inflammatory.

What is a placenta tincture and what are the benefits?

Placenta tincture is where we take a piece of your raw placenta and put it into a bottle with 100 proof vodka. Here, it ferments for 6 weeks to create a tincture that will last a lifetime. Taken under the tongue during menstruation or during menopause is said to alleviate the negative symptoms such as cramps and pain and it may reduce blood loss for a lighter, more pleasant period. It can be given to baby for teething by rubbing a few drops directly onto the gums. If the placenta belonged to girl, she can use the tincture when she starts menstruating to make the transition smoother (less cramping and ick feelings).

Do you ever have more than one placenta at a time?

No. One of the main reasons we prefer prenatal meetings, is that it allows us to properly book you in our calendar for your due date. If there happens to be two moms who are in labor, we will encapsulate one and return it to her and then pick up the next one. Alternatively, you could bring your placenta home and we can encapsulate there to ensure there is no mix up.

How can I be assured that my placenta will be encapsulated safely and properly?

I am a fully trained and certified placenta encapsulation specialist through IPPA or International Placenta & Postpartum Association. I am fully certified by Biologix Solutions; Bloodborne Pathogens & Infection Control for Placenta Encapsulation Specialists and by eFoodhandler basic food safety for the state of North Carolina. Safety and cleanliness are of the utmost importance to me. If you are more comfortable watching the process, I can encapsulate in your home.

Do you accept clients who have HIV/AIDS, Hep B, or Hep C?

Yes we do, however there are certain restrictions. We will only encapsulate in your home with your equipment. We will direct you with supply purchase if you need help.

What would prevent you from encapsulating my placenta?

There are certain contraindications that will prevent me from encapsulating your placenta.

  • The placenta went to pathology
  • The placenta has been refrigerated for more than 3 days
  • The placenta sat in room temperature for more than 4 hours
  • The placenta has stringy or mucousy blood
  • Mom had a Uterine infection or chorioamnionitis
  • Mom was a heavy smoker during pregnancy
  • Cancer of the placenta (choriocarcinoma)
  • Some genetic disorders
  • Mother was on certain medications

What if my placenta cannot be removed from the hospital?

If your placenta cannot be returned to you for reasons stated above, you will receive a refund minus the $50 deposit. Exceptions to this rule will be if pregnancy results in miscarriage or stillbirth. In that case, a full refund will be issued.

During promotions or events there may be discounts given. Otherwise, no discounts will be given. I will, however, accept barter as a means of payment. Payment plans will be accepted on a case by case basis. Please contact me to discuss.
